Why We Need Your Help

Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.

I am walking on behalf of my mother Queen Sandifer who was diagnosed with ALS in 2009. To know her is to love her! She is a true fighter in every sense of the word. She continues to live life to the fullest. She can still walk for short periods with the use of a walker, otherwise she uses a wheelchair. She can eat on her own and dress herself. Communication is difficult as it sometimes very hard to understand what she is saying therefore we are text messaging each other often.  She has become a pro at texting and adding photos now. She is a true joy to be around and always has a smile on her face. While it is difficult for her to not be able to do a lot of the things she is used to doing on her own, she is thankful for the things that she can still do. My family was devastated when we first learned of her diagnosis. All we could think of was that she was going to be gone in 3 years because statistics say that is the life expectancy once diagnosed. Well I am here to tell you she is defying those odds and we cherish each and every day with her. I WALK BECAUSE I CAN!

Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.

This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease though support is bringing researchers closer to an answer. In the mean time it costs an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need.
